Day 1 February 24/25. Departure February 24 at 23:40  , Aeroflot flight Su 0284 arrives in Colombo at 10:50 on February 25

Colombo - Pinnawala - Sigiriya (190 km - 5 hours on the road)

Meeting at the airport and drive to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (approximately 2.5 hours). We will have breakfast, see elephants and then we will go to Sigiriya, check into a hotel and have a rest.

Pinnawala. Pinnawala is on the way from Colombo to Kandy. There, on the banks of the Maha Oya River, an orphanage for orphaned and injured elephants was established in 1975. Currently, the orphanage has become the largest in the world, it contains and protects about 90 orphan elephants, of which 60 are newborns. Here they receive food and education. The role of elephants in the life of Sri Lanka is invaluable - they work in logging, participate in shows and religious processions. Pinnawala is a unique place where you can not only watch elephants bathing in the river, but also wash them and feed them fruits. And babies - milk.

Day 2  February 26     Sigiriya - Pollunaruwa - Sigiriya

After breakfast, excursion to Polonnaruwa - the second capital of Sri Lanka, 11-13 century AD.

The main attraction of the city is the Gal Vihara temple - the most famous temple in Sri Lanka. Four Buddha statues in various poses, carved into granite rock, are called "the best sculptural group in the whole world." On the left side is a meditating Buddha sitting on a lion throne, next to it is a seated Buddha 7 meters high with arms folded on his chest. It is believed that this is the figure of the disciple of the Buddha Ananda, inclined towards his teacher and accompanying him to the world of nirvana. In confirmation of this, there is a statue of a reclining Buddha about 14 meters long nearby. The Polonnaruwa Archaeological Museum has a collection of jewelry, household items, ancient coins, and cult statues. Polonnaruwa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the afternoon visit the "Fortress in the Sky":

Sigiriya. The residence for King Kasap was erected in the 5th century AD. e . Sigiriya or Lion Rock, 370 meters high, was named so because of the huge stone lion that once stood at the entrance to the top. At the top, the ruins of the Upper Palace remained, and at the foot is the Lower Palace, surrounded by walls and a moat filled with water. Steps carved in stone lead to the Upper Palace. During the time of the ancient rulers, the surface of the wall, 140 meters long and 40 meters high, was completely covered with frescoes with figures of apsaras - celestial dancers. Resistant vegetable paints allowed the frescoes to be partially preserved, even the past one and a half thousand years could not completely erase them. Since 1982, Sigiriya has been under the protection of UNESCO.
